I was recently talking with a very bright college freshman who excels in science and in foreign languages. She was telling me about her friends, the people she studied with, and the travels she had completed, including a recent visit to Japan. We also talked about organic chemistry and some of the nuances of chemical crystal structure. It was clear that she had an inherent desire to learn and had a breadth of interests she was happily pursuing in college. I have been very fortunate indeed to be a college professor for more than 40 years and have met quite…
The ensemble cast of “Skate To Hell” is definitely something.Skate To Hell benefits from a bizarre ensemble castSkate To Hell is the kind of movie that will appeal to who it appeals to — and is probably too unsavory for anybody else. But I think that was the mission statement of director Shawn C. Phillips, who evidently wanted this neo-splatter flick to feel like all of the straight to video bloodbaths of the ’90s.The story is secondary to the impressive gore effects. And rest assured, Skate To Hell has some GNARLY bloodshed, to the point the special effects rival, if…
Kirk Cousins has followed the same playbook all three times he’s been a free agent. However, before he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, the veteran quarterback’s free-agency game plan called for something different: a FaceTime call with Tom Brady. A few days after Cousins officially signed with Las Vegas, he shared that he spoke with Brady, a minority owner of the Raiders, in an unusual setting before making his free-agent decision. “You know me, I’m going to do my homework before I sign somewhere. So, I had a lot of conversations with people here and there with the Raiders’ organization,” Cousins…
You’ve prepared diligently for a public speaking event, senior leadership meeting, or conference tournament. Yet as game day approaches, the doubts and nerves creep in. Unpleasant thoughts pop up: What if I fall on my face? What if I embarrass myself in front of the most important people in my life? Often, these questions reflect a deeper fear: What if I lose love?” Performance moments have a way of revealing our humanness: our basic…

Algorithms are growing more powerful by the year. What they measure is a ghost of a pattern that once looked like someone statistically adjacent to you and me. The gap between past and present is costing us more than we notice. Machines that never met you Imagine you are standing on one side of a traditional scale. On the other side: a machine that has never met you, never been hungry, never buried anyone, never changed its mind at three in the morning. The machine nonetheless decides, in milliseconds, whether you are creditworthy, whether your job application clears a filter,…

A large body of research shows that narcissists make poor romantic partners. They are less committed, more likely to play manipulative games, and blame others when things go wrong. Despite that, narcissists are often attractive and charming initially. This has led researchers to posit that relationships with narcissists may be especially appealing early on, only to have a sharp decline in satisfaction. Surprisingly, there hasn’t been much research examining the relationship trajectory of those partnered with narcissists. In a study that I just published in Journal of Personality, along with William Chopik, we examined how narcissism might affect changes in…
