Sony Pictures has officially landed Hollow, a new reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow that will star Sweeney and be written and directed by Pet Sematary: Bloodlines filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer.
Instead of following Ichabod Crane, Hollow shifts the spotlight to Katrina Van Tassel, reimagining one of literature’s most recognizable characters as the center of the mystery. According to the official description, the story “positions Van Tassel not as a romantic prize, but as the central figure in a dangerous mystery and seductive supernatural love triangle.”
The project is based on Beer’s upcoming debut novel, which isn’t expected to hit bookstore shelves until Fall 2027. Sony was reportedly aggressive in pursuing the adaptation, ultimately winning a competitive bidding war for the rights before the novel has even been released.
The film is being produced by LuckyChap Entertainment, the company behind recent hits including Barbie and Saltburn, alongside Sweeney’s own production company, Honey Trap. The project also marks one of the first films to come from Honey Trap’s first-look deal with Sony.
While Washington Irving’s original tale has been adapted countless times over the years, Hollow appears to be taking a very different approach. The official synopsis describes the story as a blend of gothic horror, psychological mystery, and supernatural romance, giving Katrina a much larger role than she’s traditionally played.
With Sweeney continuing to embrace the horror genre after films like Immaculate, and Beer returning to the director’s chair, Hollow is already shaping up to be one to keep an eye on.
No release date has been announced.
