Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested he would offer Hamas immunity if it releases the remaining hostages and leaves the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli leader appeared to confirm leaked details of President Trump’s proposed peace plan which would grant amnesty to Hamas fighters.
“If Hamas leaders, for example, are escorted out of the country, yeah, if they finish the war, release all the hostages, we’ll let them out,” Netanyahu told Fox News on Sunday.
“All of that, I think, is part of the plan. I’m not going to preempt it, because we’re having these discussions exactly right now,” he said.
Netanyahu’s comments came after it was reported that Trump would be willing to grant Hamas leaders safe passage out of Gaza if the remaining 48 hostages being held in the territory are released within 48 hours of Israel publicly accepting the deal.
Israel would also free several hundred Palestinian prisoners currently serving life sentences, as well as more than 1,000 Gazans arrested since the start of the war, along with the bodies of several hundred Palestinians, according to the Times of Israel, which saw a copy of the full plan.
Netanyahu had previously maintained that only the complete crushing of Hamas, including its leadership, would bring an end to the three-year war in Gaza.
