Fans are clamoring for the return of Matthew Lillard’s character, Stu Macher, in Scream 7. In the realm of the Scream universe, it is not impossible. The actor himself has always said his character was never confirmed dead, and he had always hoped for a return in the saga.
In the past, writer and director Kevin Williamson originally told fans Stu Macher was definitely dead. However, Lillard reveals that may not be true citing a phone call he received from the creator.
“When he asked me, I was like, ‘I thought you didn’t want me in the film,’” Lillard recalled. “He’s like, ‘I wanted you to shut up because I want you in the film.’”
We saw the return of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in Scream (2022) and Scream 6 (2023). While Billy did not return in the flesh, fans loved seeing Ulrich reprise the role.
However, unlike Billy, fans think Stu is very much alive. The final blow that supposedly killed him was when scream queen Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) dropped a television on his head and electrocuted him.
Unlike modern day flat screen televisions, the old school CRT probably weighed around 50lbs. The impact and resulting electrocution could have killed him, but it may not have. There was never confirmation of his death.
Afterall, according to beloved horror geek Randy Meeks from the original movie, the killer always comes back for “one last scare.”
Dissecting the Trailer
There are small hints dropped along the way in the Scream 7 trailer that could lead to the reveal of Stu’s long awaited return. For instance, his quote from the original “This is going to be fun!” is at the very end of the trailer released two months ago.
In the most recent trailer, Fallbrook Psychiatric Hospital is previewed. Even before having 50lbs dropped on his brain, we all knew Stu was a few knives short of a set. This would be an ideal place to house the killer if he had survived.
Another detail fans have grabbed onto is regarding the Stab Airbnb. There is a body outline where Billy Loomis died, as well as other victims in the original. However, there is not a body outline in the living room where Stu had supposedly met his demise. No outline, no dead body?
Fan Theories
The leading theory fans hope for is the return of Stu Macher, alive and well. It is anticipated by many we will see his reveal from behind the Ghostface mask delivering his infamous line, which is revisited in the newest trailer; “Surprise, Sidney.”

If Stu is in fact dead, others think the new Ghostface will be an offspring of his. If Stu in fact fathered a child, they would be around the age of Sidney’s 17 year old daughter. This falls into place with the line delivered by Ghostface from the new trailer “I’ve been waiting a long time for this.” Seventeen years to be exact?
Another popular theory is that the new killer might be Sidney’s daughter, Tatum. The ‘blue plaid’ or ‘blue flannel’ conspiracy hit the internet fairly recently. Fans found the wardrobe connection is worn amongst many of the Scream killers.

In the trailer to Scream 7 we see Tatum, Sidney’s daughter, is wearing a blue plaid mini skirt. Coincidence? …or killer? Jill Roberts explained in Scream 4 that growing up in the shadow of her cousin Sidney Prescott was hard. Imagine how difficult it would be for her own daughter! Maybe Tatum isn’t destined to be a victim, but a killer.
Afterall, everyone is a suspect!
