If reality is a simulation, isn’t the idea that reality is a simulation itself a simulation? Then reality must be real — correct? If only it were that simple.
Every age builds its cosmology from its most advanced machines while keeping the old myths running in the background. The clockmakers gave us a clockwork universe; the industrial age, a body engine of classical forces; now, in the age of computation, quantum mechanics, and AI, a growing number of thoughtful people suspect reality itself is a very sophisticated program.
It can scarcely be denied that the supreme goal of all theory is to make the irreducible basic elements as simple and as few as possible without having to surrender the adequate representation of a single datum of experience. — Albert Einstein (1933)
Nick Bostrom’s argument is a trilemma: humanity likely goes extinct before a posthuman stage, posthuman civilizations rarely run ancestor simulations, or we are almost certainly in one (Bostrom, 2003) — which seems to presume what it sets out to prove. The cultural case is louder: Elon Musk puts the odds we live in “base reality” at “one in billions” (On with Kara Swisher, 2016); Neil deGrasse Tyson says the likelihood “may be very high” (American Museum of Natural History, 2016); The Matrix (Wachowski & Wachowski, 1999) made it a modern myth of repression and freedom — waking from a deception into a harsher but truer reality. The hypothesis moves the opposite way.
Take it seriously less for what it says about the cosmos than about us — perhaps a way to relieve the hardest problems, existence, meaning, mortality, by supposing none of it is real.
Suppose it is correct. For daily life it changes little — try telling the gas-station attendant you needn’t pay because nothing is real — except in one respect: living things would not be alive as we take them to be. David Chalmers resists that conclusion. “Virtual reality is genuine reality,” he writes, and “Life in virtual worlds can be as good, in principle, as life outside virtual worlds” (Chalmers, 2022, p. xviii). His point is not that a depiction and a person are identical, but that a well-realized virtual life could be genuine, not counterfeit. Even so, the view demands a concession: that the aliveness one knows from inside is, at bottom, computation, and the felt line between a living being and a remarkable rendering may have to go.
Suppose instead it is false. Then it is metaphysics carried as conviction, dressed in artificial intelligence and paired with the belief that machines too are alive — securing the irreality of the real, relieving us of the plain fact of being an animal in the world. A harsher explanation, but likelier; simpler, per Occam’s razor.
Escape From Reality
The impulse to doubt the world — perhaps to escape physicality — is ancient, and wears many masks. Plato’s cave is about education and knowledge, prisoners taking shadows for the real (Plato, ca. 375 BCE/1992, Book VII). Descartes’ demon is a device of methodological skepticism (Descartes, 1641/1996, Meditation I). Putnam’s brain in a vat concerns reference and skepticism, not cosmology (Putnam, 1981, ch. 1). Zhuangzi, unsure whether he dreamt he was a butterfly or was a butterfly dreaming him, explores perspective and transformation (Zhuangzi, 2013, ch. 2). Scholars read the simulation hypothesis along these lines — as a “new technoscientific religious narrative” (Virk, 2025).
To cast them all as teaching that reality is a dream does a disservice; but each asks whether appearances can deceive, in the deepest sense. The simulation hypothesis is the latest, most literal-minded entry — set apart by its scientistic wrapper, congruent with our technological metaphors. Yet older visions that relativized self or world usually bound the vision to an ethic, a discipline of compassion or care for how to live. This one carries no such code: it offers a metaphysics of unreality and leaves quite open how we treat one another. That gap is where it can grow dangerous.
Oddly little is known about who believes it, or why. The evidence is scant: a literature review found no validated scale or representative study of simulation belief; one 2026 commercial poll reported 22% of U.S. adults considered it at least somewhat likely (7% very, 15% somewhat), while 23% did not know the concept, openness skewing younger and male (Polls & Insights, 2026).
Separate two things: entertaining the hypothesis as an idea — a probability assigned over coffee — and the lived sense that the world is not quite real. Some experience the latter as derealization: a felt unreality in which reality testing remains intact (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). That is a symptom, not a position, and nothing here shows simulation belief is caused by derealization; at most the resemblance is a research question. My own suspicion, as interpretation not finding, is that the hypothesis can work as a projection — an inner unreality read outward onto the cosmos.
Death Be Not Proud
Beneath that may lie the denial of death. Ernest Becker argued that much of culture is machinery for holding mortality at bay (Becker, 1973); the hypothesis offers a modern version — not an afterlife but an ill-defined upperlife (if you will), a higher plane on which one is perhaps never quite alive, and so can never quite die.
Erich Fromm treated the tension between pro- and anti-life stances at length — largely around the last century’s horrors and the uses of technology — through lenses we can apply here. He set biophilia, a love of the living, against a necrophilous orientation toward death, the nonliving, and the mechanical (Fromm, 1964, 1973). When does a computational metaphor become a preference for the mechanical over the living?
Recent research bears on this. One study tied existential nihilism to lower well-being in campus and online nihilism-community samples (Crammond et al., 2026); another found it predicted suicidal ideation among 775 students across three waves, even after accounting for meaning in life and depressive symptoms (Kyron et al., 2025). Neither shows simulation belief causes either outcome, but the overlap merits study.
If the world is only rendered, do other people become non-player characters toward whom cruelty costs nothing? One might prefer exit to repair; and where nothing is finally real, there is less common ground for truth and less demand for common humanity.
Stranger Danger
What can be said without more research is limited by epistemic humility. We are often manifestations of the very processes about which we are most curious. We can comprehend only what the human brain, augmented or otherwise, permits. To wonder whether reality is a simulation is itself a living, conscious act — yet to believe the hypothesis is perhaps in ways a matter of faith that sounds scientific.
The hypothesis has caught a cultural zeitgeist. Is that because it might be true — the universe some vast program — or because the idea springs from metaphors thrown off by rapidly advancing computing and AI? From my perspective, it is more likely defensive, in keeping with a long line of unproven, largely metaphysical responses to existential concern. Old wine in new pixels.
