The Yankees fully expected to be playing in the ALCS on Thursday.
Instead, the only action at Yankee Stadium was bulldozers going to work on the infield, with Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone inside in a press conference room trying to explain away another year of coming up short, the 16th straight since the franchise captured its last World Series championship.
Hal Steinbrenner, who has not held a press conference since the one in spring training announcing the lifting of the club’s ban on facial hair, was not in attendance. But in the week since the Yankees were knocked out of the ALDS by the Blue Jays, his feelings have been all too familiar.
“Frustrated, disappointed,” Cashman said. “He wants it. He wants a championship here, another one, for him and his family. They believed, not just recently, but many times that we had a chance to do something. But it’s not a given.”
