What does it mean to feel stuck? This could mean different things for various people, but it usually involves being faced with a major decision in a specific area of your life. Common examples are ending a relationship, changing careers, quitting your job, or moving long-distance.
At each stage of our lives, we learn more about who we are through our experiences, and this helps to inform our path in life. The traditional life path has been about meeting people, having fun, exploring a career path in our younger years; settling into a long-term romantic relationship; having children (for some); advancing in our career; building financial freedom and stability in midlife; and then winding down our career, enjoying more of our free time with family and friends, and spending more time in our hobbies and travel.
However, the traditional path is not right for many of us. Economic uncertainty can lead to job loss, personal growth, and evolution, which can usher in change that makes you realize your long-term relationship no longer serves you and must either change or end. Your life experiences may also reveal gifts and talents that lead you to change careers.
In the complex, modern world we live in, most people’s life paths are non-linear. They take many twists and turns, often unexpectedly, and come to a crossroads. Many take the easy path leading to comfort instead of the one that bends toward growth and evolution.
There is, however, a paradox: If we keep following the easy path and don’t confront the real obstacles facing us, those external obstacles will become an inner voice nagging us to face them head-on. This will manifest as feeling stuck, because even though we are following one path, our intuition is screaming that we need to choose the one we are avoiding.
The question then arises: How does one get unstuck when one is at a crossroads, facing major life decisions? There is no easy answer to this question, but a few tips may help bring more clarity.
Talk to Your Future Self
Project yourself five to 10 years into the future. Ask your future self how they feel about the path you have chosen versus the alternate path. Put yourself in those future shoes, and feel into the person you will become based on the path you take. Your future self will likely inform you through feeling and intuition about the decision you should make.
Consider What’s Outside Your Comfort Zone
Most people avoid making difficult choices and stay stuck in their comfort zone because of fear and familiarity. The problem is that it doesn’t allow you to grow and evolve, which can only happen through facing challenging situations (often requiring the difficult path). The right decision usually involves immediate pain and discomfort in exchange for eventual clarity, self-knowledge, and fulfillment. We can only get there by taking the road least travelled.
Don’t Waste Time
Your time is limited. Every day that you spend stuck in your current situation is more time you have lost to a potential future bringing more joy and fulfillment. We can always gain back lost finances, but we can never get back lost time, and most people let their past dictate their future. The only moment that matters is the present because this is the only time we can make choices that will shape our lives. However, if we don’t use the present to make those crucial choices, then the moment is lost—and so is time.
Make a Self-Loving Choice
Ask yourself this question: If I truly loved myself, then what path would I take? This will help bring clarity to the choices you are faced with. Of course, you could always choose like someone who doesn’t love themselves, but you will have to live with that decision and face the consequences with full knowledge of your relationship to yourself.
In conclusion, life often brings us to a crossroads and forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about our current situation. The choices we make at these critical junctures can affect the course of our lives and lead us to greater joy, peace, and fulfillment, or they can leave us stuck in pain and misery. This is why it is important to contemplate deeply and choose wisely. Usually, the choice we are avoiding is the choice we need to make.
