Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said that President Trump seeking another term in the White House is “very unlikely, but don’t ever close the book on” the president.
“Senator, is it constitutional for President Trump to run for a third term? He’s teasing that,” a reporter asked Tuberville in a clip posted to the social platform X Tuesday.
“You know, if you read the Constitution, it says it’s not, but if he says he has some, some different circumstances that might be able to go around the Constitution, but that’s up to him. We got a long way to go before that happens,” Tuberville responded.
“But you’re open to it?” the reporter replied.
“Well, I think that there’s going to be having to — have to be an evaluation from President Trump’s viewpoint to the Constitution. There will be a lot of legal aspects to it. Will it happen? It’s very unlikely, but don’t ever close the book on President Trump,” the Alabama senator said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) revealed that he has talked with Trump on the constitutional limitations that would bar Trump from seeking another term. The Louisiana Republican said he did not view “the path” to getting Trump an extra term after 2028.
“It’s been a great run, but I think the president knows — and he and I’ve talked about the constrictions of the Constitution, as much as so many of the American people lament that,” Johnson said during a press conference.
“The Trump 2028 cap is one of the most popular that’s ever been produced,” Johnson added.
But the Speaker noted the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which bars any person from winning the White House more than twice.
“I don’t see a way to amend the Constitution, because it takes about 10 years to do that, as you know, to allow all the states to ratify,” Johnson said.
