Everyone knows Guillermo del Toro. He is the mastermind behind some of modern horror’s greatest works. From The Devil’s Backbone to Pan’s Labyrinth, he has shown a style and range that few other directors can compete with. However, del Toro may be finished with this unique style of film in a recent interview with Empire.
Del Toro has been in the spotlight more than usual as fans anxiously await his new Frankenstein film. Netflix’s Frankenstein is set to release for a limited theatrical run on October 17th before its official release on Netflix on November 7th. However, Del Toro tells Empire that the film will mark the end of a cycle.
“This movie closes the cycle. If you look at the lineage, from Cronos to The Devil’s Backbone, to Pan’s Labyrinth to Crimson Peak to this, this is an evolution of a certain type of aesthetic, and a certain type of rhythm, and a certain type of empathy. I feel like I need a change. You never know, the day after tomorrow, I may want to do Jekyll & Hyde, or whatever. But right now, my desire is to try and do something very different.”
Now, what does this mean exactly? We honestly don’t know. It signals that del Toro wants to head in a new artistic direction. Does this mean ever more strange and fantastical? Or, maybe something a little bit more classical? No one has the answers at the moment. We will all just have to continue having faith that Guillermo del Toro is one of the greatest minds we have in entertainment and trust his lead.
