New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani (D) on Sunday mocked former Gov. Andrew Cuomo after President Trump backed him in a recent interview.
“Congratulations, @AndrewCuomo. I know how hard you worked for this,” Mamdani said in a Sunday post on the social platform X.
Mamdani’s post also featured a large red graphic reading “TRUMP endorses CUOMO” in white text, with the president and the former governor depicted right next to each other at the bottom.
The president signaled on “60 Minutes” on Sunday, two days before Election Day, that he saw the former New York governor as the lesser of two evils in comparison to Mamdani.
“It’s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there,” Trump said.
“So I don’t know that he’s won, and I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it’s going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’m going to pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you.”
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, shocked the political world when he defeated Cuomo in the June Democratic primary for the Big Apple’s mayor. His star has risen dramatically in recent months, with many talking about Mamdani’s campaign as a blueprint for the Democrats to look at in future elections.
When reached for comment, Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi said in a statement that “Mamdani is lying and gaslighting his way through this election.”
“Only one candidate has a record of standing up to Trump when he tried to hurt New York and winning and that’s Andrew Cuomo,” he added.
Mamdani has a wide lead over Cuomo in the latest polling. An Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey released Thursday shows Mamdani at 50 percent support, Cuomo at 25 percent and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa at 21 percent. Close to 4 percent of survey respondents say they’re undecided.
