President Trump on Friday will travel to Asia for his first visit to the region since returning to the White House.
The visit comes as the government shutdown hit Day 24 with no end in sight. Senators left Washington for the weekend and the House has been out for over a month as the stalemate persists.
Trump departs for Malaysia later this evening to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) before visiting Japan to meet with the country’s new prime minister.
Later next week, the president will head to South Korea and speak at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum. There, Trump will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping as tensions between both countries flare over trade.
Meanwhile, the president’s announcement on Thursday that the U.S. would cut off trade negotiations with Canada has already received some backlash from Democrats.
New York Attorney General Letitia James pleaded not guilty on Friday to two charges in the mortgage fraud case. The judge set a trial date for Jan. 26.
