Weapons made horror movie history in 2025. The movie is Zach Cregger’s twisted, horrific baby that has dominated the horror industry. From writer and director, to producer and co-score creator, Cregger molded this movie from concept to screen. So when the man says talks of the prequel are real, you better believe him!
Cregger’s movie was such a success, it was the first film to open first place at the box office six consecutive times. With being the second highest grossing original horror movie this year, it’s no wonder Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema initiated talks of expansion.
Immediately, the direction was determined to be a prequel focused around grotesquely eccentric Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan (Antlers). When speaking to Fangoria, Cregger confirmed;
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit. I was ready, I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
The Weapons director originally included an entire chapter on Aunt Gladys in the initial script. He fleshed out her character with an origin story, explaining her and her life before she arrived in Maybrook, Pennsylvania.
In fact, he even spoke to Madigan about a few different possible backstories for everyone’s favorite redheaded aunt. However, Cregger decided not to follow through with this idea. Furthermore, Madigan never told the director which of the two storylines for her character she preferred.

He believed not telling the audience about her backstory was more frightening than if they knew. To preserve the mystery, he believed the movie played better in the final cut. Regarding his decision, he told Gizmodo in an interview;
“I realized that it was just giving too much away. It’s more compelling to not know some of these things”.
Not until now. Now with the talks of a prequel being greenlit, we can finally know all of those little details that answer the burning questions we have about this mysterious woman! Such as… is she even human?

Cregger has not disclosed how much of a hand he will have in the prequel. Will he be wearing four different hats, or will he be staying out of the director’s chair completely? Furthermore, he has not given us any sort of timeline for the project.
However, if you are looking for a Cregger fix, his horror film Barbarian (2022) featuring Bill Skarsgard is currently streaming on Hulu.
