Cam Newton hits back at Drake Maye while doubling down on “Patriots are fool’s gold” remark

Cam Newton fired back at Drake Maye after the second-year quarterback dismissed Newton’s comments on the New England Patriots. On Friday, Newton called his former team “fool’s gold,” adding that they had beaten weak teams en route to their 9-2 record.

Maye responded to the comments on Wednesday, saying that he didn’t pay much attention to the media and that Newton and whoever were entitled to their opinion, more so given the nature of their job (entertaining fans).

On Thursday, Newton stood on stage at a “First Take” remote broadcast at Bethune-Cookman University. The former NFL MVP doubled down on his comments.

“See, I gotta stand on business right here, you know what I’m saying?” Newton said. “I need him, as in Drake Maye, to understand this. Now, being in this position as a member of the media, there’s a lot of things that are not always done, and it’s always this.

Newton said that the Pats are fool’s gold because if the AFC runs through them, he doesn’t see star quarterbacks such as Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes losing a wild card matchup against Drake Maye. He added that the Pats, just like the Colts, are a question mark, finishing with a warning to the people asking these questions.

“Drake Maye – respectfully, you’re having a great season. But I also put Drake Maye in a position where it’s like – yo, we don’t really know, similar to [Daniel] Jones. So to the reporter that asked the question – that was a great job, because columnists typically do these type of things just to poke the bear. But this is merely a warning – don’t keep poking this bear.”

The Patriots haven’t had a difficult schedule, but they have gone to Buffalo and beaten the Bills in Week 5. In Week 10, they went to Raymond James Stadium and left with a big win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Stephen A. Smith calls Drake Maye a “liar” over response to Cam Newton

Cam Newton wasn’t the only one hitting back at Maye on Thursday. Stephen A. Smith called out the quarterback for saying he doesn’t know where Newton works.

Smith brought up that “Pardon the Interruption” is ESPN’s top show, while “First Take” is the No. 1 morning show.

The feud between the Patriots and the ESPN talents appears to be heated on one side, as Maye and head coach Mike Vrabel downplayed the remarks.
