A U.S. climber was among two people killed in a fall on Aoraki, New Zealand’s tallest peak, authorities said Wednesday. The men were part of a four-person group climbing near the summit of Aoraki, also known as Mount Cook, on Monday. Two members were rescued by helicopter after authorities received a distress call late that night. The other two couldn’t be found. Ukraine and Russia traded deadly blows Tuesday, firing hundreds of drones in overnight assaults that came just hours before Washington officials met with their Kyiv and Moscow counterparts to discuss a new proposal to end the war. Moscow fired 460 drones and 22 missiles at Ukraine during the exchange, killing seven people and wounding 21 others in the second major attack on the Ukrainian capital this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. “The main Russian attack overnight targeted the capital and the region, causing extensive damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure across the city,” Zelensky wrote on X. The Issue: President Trump and Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s friendly Oval Office meeting. I was shocked to see President Trump suckered in by the mayor-elect (“Zo the big apple of his eye,” Nov. 22). Zohran Mamdani will play nice until Trump’s out of office, and then he will revert to his true self. Leopards do not change their spots; Mamdani is a socialist and antisemite. It’s too bad Trump didn’t bring up the subject of antisemitism. It would have been interesting to see the mayor-elect’s response. Herb Mordkoff Rockaway, NJ Trump outmaneuvered the Democrats by bringing Mamdani into his orbit —…
The Global Flourishing Study (Johnson, et al., 2024) was hailed as one of the most ambitious undertakings in modern social science. Over 207,000 participants, 22 countries, six core domains of wellbeing — all aimed at answering one timeless question: What contributes to a life well-lived? The study’s reach is extraordinary. It measures happiness, health, purpose, virtue, relationships, and financial stability across 23 diverse countries. It’s a milestone in the growing global movement to understand human flourishing. And yet, amid all the precision and scale, one absence is striking. Not once does the study mention disability, neurodiversity, or accessibility. For a…

A historic gold ring from the English countryside will go under the hammer this month — and experts believe it may be linked to one of the most infamous conspiracies in British history. The piece of jewelry was uncovered by metal detectorist Andrew Rose, who found it six inches in the ground in Bushwood, Warwickshire, about 20 miles southeast of Birmingham. The artifact features an inner inscription reading “Your Frende in Deede,” a message thought to symbolize loyalty. The 16th-century band may be tied to the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, an attempt by English Catholics to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill…
Scarlett Johansson is going to rub elbows with the devil in the new Exorcist movie, a franchise that is only as good as its last sequel, and you know how that turned out, but to be fair, Believer isn’t the worst in the series. Our favorite prattle-heavy screenwriter Mike Flanagan, is going to try his […]
