It is hard for so many of us of all ages to apologize sincerely. We have found in our therapy work that an apology or the lack of one can be pivotal in a relationship and yet we hear the struggles many people experience when they do not make them or may not receive them. What we are referring to are those smaller day-to-day moments when we misstep by saying or doing something hurtful. We wanted to talk with you about why we don’t do them, how to work with that for you and your child, and what a true…
In 2000, Time magazine warned of a coming Boomerdämmerung. The Baby Boomers, it argued, had failed to build enduring wealth, were unprepared for the digital transition, and carried a narcissistic entitlement that made them reluctant to relinquish power. “And your neighbors’ children,” the magazine warned, “simultaneously burdened with the cost of your aging and victimized by the one thing you’ll hold onto—your political power—will boil with resentment.” The forecast was of a looming gerontocracy that could entrench itself in political power and then fracture under its own weight. Twenty-five years later, the twilight has arrived more slowly than expected, and…
As human activities alter local-to-global environments, people are reporting stress, distress, depression, anxiety, worry, psychological trauma, and other negative emotions. Phrases coined to describe these responses include solastalgia, eco-anxiety, climate change anxiety, climate fear, and ecological grief. Scientifically, all these ideas are in their infancy. To improve understanding and to really get to the basics of how human beings respond to different environmental changes, researchers are developing scales and indices, some of which are clinical and some of which are not. Usefulness and usability One immediate question is the value of non-clinical quantification for mental health conditions, especially life-threatening ones…
Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller has recently expressed his interest in bringing Thomas Harris’ Silence of the Lambs to life once again. In an interview with Screen Rant, the director/writer said; “My dream project is to do a limited series of Silence of the Lambs with Mads and Zendaya as Clarice Starling,” he said. “If I […]
Human agency is the ability to direct our own thinking. It’s not just a philosophical construct; it’s the everyday act of deciding what to learn, what to believe, and when to stop and think before accepting an answer. Agency is what keeps us from running on cognitive autopilot. Artificial intelligence now offers to do much of that work for us. With a single prompt, we can receive elegant summaries and polished solutions that are so smooth and immediate that they can (and often do) lull us into submission. If we aren’t careful, we risk becoming passengers in our own intellectual…

Whether it is the parents on your child’s sports team, a group of people who live in the same cul-de-sac, or your team at work, people in a group can turn toxic quickly. Four signs may signify that it is not a healthy situation, and knowing how to deal with it may protect you. Four signs indicate that you are involved in such a group. First, you discover that the people in the group have been talking negatively about you behind your back. Hurt and confused, you wrack your brain for anything that you may have done to upset somebody,…
Imagine going to the doctor for a minor problem, like weakness in your leg, and you are told that 90 percent of your brain is missing. Sound impossible? It happened to a 44-year-old French civil servant. This case, and others like it, challenge everything we thought we knew about the brain’s role in human consciousness and intelligence. Perhaps the most interesting question isn’t how someone can function without a brain, but rather, where else might intelligence reside in the human body? When Less Brain Means More Questions In 2007, researchers published a fascinating case report in the medical journal The…
