I had the opportunity to check out Vicious at its Fantastic Fest premiere. It’s a tense, moody story about a woman who is gifted a mysterious box. When she opens it, she finds herself at the mercy of the force that dwells inside; one that knows and preys upon her doubts and fears. I sat down with writer/director Bryan Bertino following the screening to talk about the film, casting Dakota Fanning, and how the past can haunt us all. In the Q&A after the screening, you had talked about how the genesis for the film was the idea of Polly…
A bargain hunter recently spotted ancient artifacts, including rings and medallions, that were up for sale for a mere $30. The customer noticed the treasures at a thrift store in Chilliwack, Canada, around 60 miles east of Vancouver. Simon Fraser University, a public university in British Columbia that ultimately received the finds, announced the donation in a Sept. 24 press release. Employees at Thrifty Boutique, a store run by the Chilliwack Hospice Society, alerted the school after a customer with an archaeology background noticed the jewelry and its “potential archaeological significance.” The set included 11 rings and two medallions. Pictures of the artifacts show…
Money continues to be one of the most challenging topics for many of us, often more difficult to talk about than politics, religion, or even our most personal histories. Yet money permeates every part of our lives. Many people live with constant fear, anxiety, and insecurity about their financial situation. Money worries remain one of the greatest sources of stress in Canada, and financial stress is cited as a leading cause of divorce, and we still don’t talk about money (FP Canada 2025; Scott et al., 2013). Despite money being a significant stressor, many of us have been taught not…
Carrie Preston is the good wife. But before falling in love and walking down the aisle with husband Michael Emerson, in 1998, the now Emmy-winning actress had some reservations. The couple first met while performing in “Hamlet” at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival 31 years ago. Carrie Preston and Michael Emerson attend CBS’ “Elsbeth” Season 3 Premiere. Getty Images Though immediately smitten, Preston initially thought Emerson was gay. “I was like, ‘Who the hell’s that guy?’” the “Claws” alum recalled on Tuesday’s episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast. “He walked into rehearsal with the three-piece suit, and I was…
MEXICO CITY — Amid the constant blare of car horns in southern Mexico City, it’s hard to imagine that Cuicuilco was once the heart of a thriving ancient civilization. Yet atop its circular pyramid, now surrounded by buildings and a shopping center, a pre-Hispanic fire god was revered. “This is incredible,” said Evangelina Báez, who spent a recent morning at Cuicuilco with her daughters. “In the midst of so much urbanization, there’s still this haven of peace.” Her visit was part of a monthly tour program crafted by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, known by its Spanish initials as INAH. Archaeologist Pablo…
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Two state police officers in Pennsylvania pursuing a vehicle were shot in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who was killed, authorities said. There is something deeply ironic about how only the thought of our deaths gives us reason to truly think about our lives. Memento mori is a tradition as old as it is haunting, and the brief encounters we have with our own mortality can stop us in our tracks, until life inevitably pulls us back into its folds and we regain our blissful ignorance about how the curtains will one day fall on us as they have on everyone else before us. Now pair the reality of your own ending with another, quieter truth: There will come a final moment…
Hamas praised President Trump for his work in securing a deal to end the war in Gaza, touting the US leader as a figure who will help lead the Palestinian enclave to prosperity. The Rockettes are getting a Christmas present: Radio City Musical Hall is kicking up the sound quality.
