The Giants entered Thursday night’s game against the Eagles shorthanded at receiver, with Darius Slayton out with a hamstring injury suffered on Sunday and No. 1 Malik Nabers already out with a torn ACL. The way the Giants operated, though, you would have never known it. Lil’Jordan Humphrey, a journeyman receiver who was called up to the 53-man roster before the game, caught four passes for 55 yards, including a huge 34-yarder on third-and-12 that led to the Giants’ first TD. On that play, Humphrey outleaped Eagles cornerback Kelee Ringo for the ball and made the catch — one play…
Venezuela’s government on Thursday requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council focused on the US military actions in recent weeks in the waters off the South American country. Venezuela made the request in a letter addressed to Russia’s ambassador to the UN and council president, Vassily Nebenzia, that accused the administration of US President Donald Trump of seeking to topple Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threatening “peace, security and stability regionally and internationally.” Maduro’s government also expressed its expectation of an “armed attack” against Venezuela in “a very short time.” Venezuela accused the US of seeking to…
You’re lying in bed, finally quiet after a long day, when the thought arrives: Did I remember to send that crucial email? Your chest tightens. Your breathing becomes shallow. You know you probably sent it, but your mind instantly conjures the worst-case scenario: your boss’s angry response, the project derailed, a career in ruins. If this sounds familiar, you’ve just experienced your brain’s ancient security system in action—a system brilliantly calibrated for a world that no longer exists. Our ancestors in the Paleolithic age paused to ask, Was that just the wind, or a predator? Those who assumed it was…
BUFFALO — Goalie Igor Shesterkin has been spectacular through the Rangers’ first two games of the season, combining for 65 saves on the 66 shots he’s seen. After years of playing against him as head coach of the Penguins in the Metropolitan Division, new Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan was asked about having Shesterkin on his side of the ice now. “It sure is nice,” Sullivan said with a smile after the Rangers took a 4-0 victory over the Sabres on Thursday night at KeyBank Center. “I mean, he’s a world-class goalie. He’s one of the best. You get timely…

Florida man allegedly stole $7K in scratch-off lottery tickets then returned to store to redeem them
Dumb luck. A Florida man was hit with federal charges this week after he allegedly stole $7,000 in scratch-off lottery tickets from a convenience store, then returned to the scene of the crime mere hours later to try to redeem his loot, according to authorities. Justin Farley, 43, pulled into a St. Petersburg Circle K on May 5, and “opened multiple cabinets and took scratch-off lottery tickets,” before fleeing the scene in his grey Hyundai Elantra, according to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by The Post. Justin Farley, 43, pulled into a St. Petersburg Circle K on May 5, and “opened multiple…
A student sits before a blank screen, cursor blinking. Ten years ago, she would have wrestled with ideas, crossed out sentences, rebuilt arguments from scratch. Today, she types a prompt and watches words appear as if by magic. The essay emerges polished and coherent, but something subtle has been lost in translation: the cumbersome essential process of thinking itself. Are the same technologies that promise to make us smarter making us less capable of the hard mental work that builds genuine understanding? Brains That Forget How to Remember Our minds work like muscles, growing stronger through resistance and weaker through…

The City Council approved legislation Thursday to ramp up testing requirements of building cooling towers for Legionnaires’ Disease, after an outbreak in Harlem over the summer sickened 114 people, resulting in 90 hospitalizations and 7 deaths. Intro 1390-A would require building owners to test for the presence of Legionella microbes at least every month during warmer weather months when the cooling towers are in use. The bill further requires that all such testing be performed by, or under the supervision of, a “qualified” professional.
