One day, I’m going to move to Southern California and become a Buddhist! As these words hung in the air, I was overwhelmed by the urge to take them back, but it was too late. My bold declaration had left my graduate school classmate, Nicole, with a look that was hard to read at first, but I concluded that she was about to alert the authorities, and they were coming to take me to the psychiatric hospital—a place that was unfortunately all too familiar to me. After 12 such hospitalizations, and a bipolar diagnosis, I was always on high alert.…
LOS ANGELES — The only unresolved issue within their control now is how many days off the Dodgers will have before the start of the World Series next Friday. Simply, the Dodgers are the better team in this National League Championship Series, resembling a club on a path of destruction toward a second straight World Series title. The number to consider is three. That is how many combined runs the Dodgers have surrendered in this series, as the NL West champions moved to the brink of the pennant with a 3-1 victory in Game 3 of the NLCS at Dodger…

The fans involved in the viral video, in which a Brewers fan suggested other fans “call ICE” on a Dodgers fan, have been banned from future events at American Family Field following the incident. Both the female Brewers fan who made the comment, Shannon Kobylarczyk, and Ricardo Fosado, the Latino Dodgers fan the remark was made toward, have been outlawed from the Milwaukee stadium over the incident, the Brewers said in a statement on Thursday. “The Brewers expect all persons attending games to be respectful of each other, and we do not condone in any way offensive statements fans make…
A Georgia man was arrested this week nearly three decades after he allegedly invaded five women’s Queens homes and brutally raped them — in some cases at gunpoint or with their kid in the next room, according to authorities. Michael Benjamin, 57, was cuffed Thursday morning after DNA evidence from a discarded cup linked him to numerous “violent” rapes in southeast Queens between 1995 and 1997, according to prosecutors and police sources. In one of his classic New Jersey ballads, Bruce Springsteen sings of the sun “rising over them refinery towers.” If New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy had gotten his way, the Boss would need to update the lyric to rhapsodize about enormous wind turbines looming on the horizon instead. Murphy’s obsession with wind power is one of the reasons the state’s gubernatorial race is competitive and Republican Jack Ciatarrelli has a chance to upset Murphy’s potential Democratic successor, Mikie Sherrill, in a much-watched off-year election. Gov. Murphy brought a European-style energy strategy to New Jersey, and got European-style results. Wind has…
Brian was married for three years when he came to my office in despair about his wife, Elise. Podcasts about narcissistic abuse had given him comfort, but Elise didn’t fit the typical mold—she could be loving and attuned to his feelings, even as she left him deeply confused and hurt. “What am I missing?” he asked. Penelope, married to Anthony for seven years, came in tears. She wanted a divorce but dreaded the impact on her two young children. Penelope had patiently supported Anthony through medical training, only to find him colder and more critical at home. “How can he…

Indiana is officially no longer just a basketball school. After quickly turning the Hoosiers football program from an afterthought to a national championship contender in less than two seasons, the school announced Thursday it has given head coach Curt Cignetti an eight-year, $92.8 million contract extension, ending speculation that he could jump to Penn State as a replacement for the recently fired James Franklin. The deal makes Cignetti the third highest-paid college football coach in the nation behind Georgia’s Kirby Smart ($13 million per year) and Ohio State’s Ryan Day ($12.5 million per), according to CBS Sports. Indiana has signed…
