Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is declaring that Tuesday’s elections in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and other states were a total “disaster” for Republicans and “terrible for America.”
“Look, last night was a disaster. It was an electoral blowout. The results in New Jersey were disastrous, the results in Virginia were terrible,” Cruz told Fox News host Sean Hannity in an interview Wednesday evening.
Cruz zeroed in on the mayoral election in New York City, which democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won by nearly 9 percentage points over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whom President Trump endorsed.
“Comrade Mamdani is the face of the Democrat Party,” Cruz said, claiming that Mamdani is a “full-on Communist.” Mamdani has said repeatedly he is not a communist.
“I know there are some Republicans who are saying, ‘Well, gosh, this will be good politically because he’ll be the face of the Democrat Party.’ I think it’s terrible for America. New York is the largest city in America. It is the financial capital of the world. It is the media capital of the world,” he said.
Other Republicans have sought to downplay the significance of Democratic victories in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races.
“I think it’s hard to draw conclusions. Obviously, we had states where we lost statewide elections … but I don’t think anybody expected in most cases that we were going to win those,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.).
“You can say, ‘Did we lose by more than we should have?’ or whatever, but I think in the end these results were pretty much expected,” he said.
Trump on Tuesday blamed the results of the election on the now-37-day government shutdown and his absence from the top of the ticket in New Jersey, Virginia and other states.
“‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’” Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday night.
