Alec Baldwin blamed a hulking garbage truck that was the “size of a whale” for causing him to smash his wife’s Range Rover into a “big, fat tree” in the Hamptons Monday afternoon.
Baldwin, 67, and his younger brother Stephen Baldwin were in a car crash after smacking right into a tree on the side of Montauk Highway in East Hampton.
The brothers, who were born and raised an hour outside the suburban Long Island paradise, were enjoying a cruise in Hilaria Baldwin’s white Range Rover when they careened off course.
The elder Baldwin, though, blamed the fiasco on a garbage truck that was the “size of a whale,” that he said cut him off in a video posted on Instagram.
“To avoid hitting him, I hit a tree, I hit a big, fat tree and crushed my car – my wife’s car. I crushed my wife’s car. I feel bad about that. But it’s all fine, I’m fine, and my brother’s fine,” he explained, brushing past any would-be mea culpa.
A garbage truck with the National Waste Services was at the scene after the crash, according to photos obtained by The Post.
Baldwin’s bizarre video explainer for the crash skipped between the actual wreck and a rehashing of his weekend at the Hamptons International Film Festival, which he attended through its closing night on Sunday.
He spent a chunk of the video congratulating everyone involved in the film festival, including his fellow chairs and members of its Board Executive Committee.
Baldwin repeatedly assured that he and his brother were both okay, and thanked the valiant efforts of responding law enforcement.
The actor specifically highlighted an “Officer Gerken” with the East Hampton Police Department for his help at the scene.
“As nice as can be, as pleasant as can be about the whole thing,” Baldwin praised.
Baldwin’s final round of thanks, though, was muddled as he threw in obligatory compliments to his wife, 41-year-old Hilaria Baldwin — possibly to cover his bases for ruining her pristine car.
“Hilaria, I love you more than anything. I’m very proud of you,” he said.
Baldwin, as if rehearsing a talking head segment ahead of the next season of his reality television show, added that he’s preparing for a trip to visit family out West.
“I’m going to LA to see my family, can’t wait. I’m going out to California to gather my family, to spend a few days there and then I’m home,” he said.
He promised one final time that he was fine, “other than” his typical craziness, he added jokingly as he did a circular motion with his finger next to his head.
