Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said on Sunday that President Trump “should get a lot of credit” on the deal between Israel and Hamas as the president plans to head to the region.
“How much credit does President Trump deserve for this deal?” CNN’s Dana Bash asked Kelly on “State of the Union.”
“Think he should get a lot of credit. I mean, this was his deal. He worked this out. He sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, you know, over to negotiate this and it so far has gone well,” Kelly responded.
“Hopefully the hostages get released here, might not be within 24 hours, but certainly, I think by Monday. And that’s progress, and now we’re going to have to see what happens next,” he added.
On Monday, President Trump is set to address Israel’s legislature, the Knesset, and attend a Middle East peace ceremony in Egypt. The president’s Knesset address is scheduled for 11 a.m. local time, a little under two hours after he is expected to reach Tel Aviv.
From there, Trump will head to Egypt and be a part of the peace ceremony at 2:30 p.m. local time in the coastal resort area of Sharm-el-Sheikh.
Last Wednesday, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement to free the remaining Israeli hostages and halt fighting in Gaza.
The president said Israel and Hamas had backed “the first Phase” of a peace plan in late September, a notable reprieve to stop a war that had gone on for over two years since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
“This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace. All Parties will be treated fairly!” Trump said on Truth Social.
Israel’s war in Gaza has also killed thousands of Palestinians, left the territory in a humanitarian crisis and resulted in mass infrastructure destruction. International pressure had recently mounted on Israel to end the war as the humanitarian crisis grew worse.
