The Housemaid is a new thriller soon to be released in theaters on December 19th. The movie is directed by Paul Feig (Freaks and Geeks). Surprisingly, Feig is a lifelong horror fan and has quite a few horror irons in the fire. One future project is a recently announced Blumhouse film. The movie will be based off of the docuseries Worst Roommate Ever, currently streaming on Netflix. He is also working on an original idea entitled Dark Army, which is similar to Universal Monsters instead of the slasher genre.
The Housemaid stars the beautiful Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer’s Body, Red Riding Hood) and the amazingly talented Sydney Sweeney (Nocturne, Immaculate). In addition to the two leading ladies are supporting actors Elizabeth Perkins, Michele Morrone, and Indiana Elle.
‘The Housemaid’ Plot
Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Skelnar) are a wealthy couple in need of some assistance to help manage their busy household. Enter Millie Calloway (Sweeney,) a young woman with a troubled past who is looking for a fresh start in life.

The opportunity to be the Winchester’s live-in housemaid is exactly the type of change she needs for her life to turn around. However, as she begins working for the young family, Nina stumbles upon some things that the Winchesters would rather be kept locked behind closed doors.
Housemaid is based off of the 2022 novel of the same name by Freida McFadden. However, it still remains to be seen how closely the script will follow the page.

The Psychological Thriller Genre
The trailer for The Housemaid is strongly reminiscent of the psychological thrillers of the 1990s. The formula for these movies is simple; drama, danger, and enough sex to be considered softcore porn.

The most important element is a strong female lead, sometimes even two, who drive the plot forward. Movies from this era include; Sliver (1993) starring Sharon Stone, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992) with Rebecca De Mornay, and Single White Female (1992) featuring Bridget Fonda.
With The Hand That Rocks the Cradle being remade (released on October 22nd on Hulu) and now The Housemaid, will there be a revival of the psychological thriller genre?
