PERU
Machu Picchu is in danger of losing its status as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World due to overtourism and lack of conservation policies. The 15th-century Inca citadel was honored with the title in 2007 after earning over 100 million votes in a global competition. The New7Wonders project, the campaign behind the vote, said Machu Picchu’s status hinges on Peru’s “key decision-makers.”
ITALY
A 94-year-old who still wears the centuries-old traditional clothing of her medieval village is attracting tourists who flock there to see “Nonna Margherita,” or as locals lovingly call her, “L’Ultima Regina,” which translates to “the Last Queen.” Margherita Ciarletta, who resides in Scanno in central Italy’s Abruzzo region, has proudly sported the exact same dark wool dress with long black sleeves and cotton headband since she was 18.
SOUTH KOREA
Google Maps doesn’t fully function in South Korea because the government there has been refusing to give the tech company the data it needs for the platform, citing national security concerns. Experts say the issue also goes back to the question of who gets to control a country’s data, which South Korean authorities are ruminating over and will make a decision on Google’s request in early October.
