Horror movie fans love a good reveal. But what if that reveal leads to an off-the-rails craziness that lasts throughout the remaining runtime? That’s extra points in our opinion, especially if that pace continues to the end credits.
If a film has a setup time of over 30 minutes, chances are you won’t get much action until about the last 15 minutes. The films below waste no time getting to the point, and once they do, chaos ensues.
So buckle up, and give the seven movies below a watch, then, and remember your sanity is intact even if the filmmaker’s isn’t.
The Invitation (2015)
What begins as an awkward dinner party gradually reveals something far more sinister and shocking.
What’s it about: After the death of her mother and having no other known relatives, Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) takes a DNA test…and discovers a long-lost cousin she never knew she had. Invited by her newfound family to a lavish wedding in the English countryside, she’s at first seduced by the sexy aristocrat host but is soon thrust into a nightmare of survival as she uncovers twisted secrets in her family’s history and the unsettling intentions behind their sinful generosity.
Martyrs (2008)
This one is hard to watch, and even after it’s over, you’ll have to re-watch it just to confirm that what you thought it was about isn’t conjecture.
What’s it about: Lucie is found wandering the streets bruised and bloodied. Unable to say who did this to her, she’s placed in a hospital where she meets Anna, another abused young girl. Fifteen years later, with Anna’s help, Lucie sets out to get revenge on her attackers.
The Descent (2005)
One of the greatest films ever made. Once it gets going, it never lets up, even through its twists and turns. It’s a dread-filled movie, but in the best way possible.
What’s it about: A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.
Speak No Evil (2022)
Don’t go into this one expecting anything but chaos. Second-hand embarrassment for the male protagonist is real. You’ll want to wash your body in Dude Wipes after the credits roll.
What’s it about: On a vacation in Toscana, a Danish family instantly becomes friends with a Dutch family. Months later, the Danish couple receives an unexpected invitation. It doesn’t take long before the joy of reunion is replaced with misunderstandings.
The Mist (2007)
With one of the most bleak twist endings ever put on mainstream film, The Mist is a crazy, wild ride with monsters both in creature form and human form.
What’s it about: After a violent storm attacks a town in Maine, an approaching cloud of mist appears the next morning. As the mist quickly envelops the area, a group of people get trapped in a local grocery store -among them, artist David Drayton and his five-year-old son. The people soon discover that within the mist lives numerous species of horrific, unworldly creatures that entered through an inter-dimensional rift, which may or may not have been caused by a nearby military base. As the world around them manifests into a literal hell-on-earth, the horrified citizens try desperately to survive this apocalyptic disaster.
Barbarian (2022)
The double-booked Airbnb trope is the precursor to one of the most unhinged and chaotic films in the last five years. You may never look at milk the same way again.
What’s it about: A young woman traveling to Detroit for a job interview books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double-booked, and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.
Saint Maud (2019)
Slow burning, but highly effective, Sain Maud takes you to places even Carrie White’s mother would question. The sad thing is, there are probably people just like the main character in this world.
What’s it about: A pious nurse becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient.
