Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) repudiated President Trump over his approach to ending the war in Ukraine, labeling the U.S. president the modern-day Neville Chamberlain.
“Putin-pawn Donald Trump is cementing himself as the Neville Chamberlain of our time,” Schumer wrote in a post on the social platform X.
Chamberlain, the World War II-era British prime minister, is known for his failed policy of appeasement. He met with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in 1938 and agreed to let Germany annex the Sudetenland in the hope of staving off a larger war. The following year, Nazi Germany invaded Poland.
The top Senate Democrat has long hammered Trump for what he views as too soft an approach to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom Trump met in Alaska last month to discuss the prospects of a peace deal with Ukraine.
Trump faced some criticism for greeting the Russian leader with applause and a red carpet, but he emerged from their meeting optimistic about their progress and touting concessions he said he secured from Putin.
But weeks later, no progress has materialized, and Trump is weighing new sanctions against Russia.
The Senate minority leader’s latest statement comes after Polish leaders said they shot down multiple Russian drones early Wednesday morning that had breached their airspace during an attack on Ukraine.
The incursion prompted NATO to scramble fighter jets and left leaders in the U.S. and across the globe warning that Russia was risking escalating the conflict in Europe.
