Former national security adviser John Bolton said early Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has acted as if he had a “free hand” since the summit in Alaska with President Trump.
“Putin has acted like he has a free hand since the Alaska summit,” Bolton, who also previously served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, wrote on social platform X.
“He’s ignored any further conversation on a ceasefire, the Russian military is expanding its operations, and he’s received the political support of his friends Xi Jinping, Narendra Modi, and Kim Jong Un,” he continued, referring to the leaders of the Kremlin allies China, India and North Korea.
Bolton’s statement came just hours after Polish leaders said they shot down multiple Russian drones early Wednesday morning that had breached their airspace during an attack on Ukraine.
The incursion prompted NATO to scramble fighter jets and left leaders in the U.S. and across the globe warning that Russia was risking escalating the conflict in Europe.
The ex-national security adviser’s latest post echoed sentiments he expressed in an earlier interview on Tuesday, when he warned that Russia was expanding some of its targeted drone attacks.
“There’s talk about movements of new Russian forces near the Ukrainian border,” he wrote at the time.
Last week, Putin also met with Xi and Modi in China, where the world leaders reestablished their diplomatic friendship.
Bolton during the interview said the meetings were “a real sign that Putin’s got friends who are going to have his back for continuing the war in Ukraine.”
